Warm Edge Comes to Clayton

Technical Info ... [More]

Currently, 95% of all sealed units made by Clayton Glass are manufactured with state of the art continuous spacer bar, with a further small proportion are made using the older method of cut and corner keyed bar. Looking to the future however, a new technology is on the horizon and Clayton Glass is now one of a very few North East companies who are now able offer to the market a new generation of ‘Warm Edge’ sealed units.

What Is Warm Edge?

WARM302

A standard unit is made from a conventional aluminium spacer bar which is then filled with desiccant to remove and lock away any moisture from the unit cavity. Being metallic however, the aluminium is a good conductor of heat and hence a significant proportion of the unit’s overall heat loss is across this conducting edge.

In a warm edge sealed unit, the aluminium is spacer bar is replaced with a foam based alternative, with far greater insulation properties than its conventional equivalent. Whilst   the ‘centre pane’ heat losses and thus the centre pane U-Value are unchanged, as the heat losses through the spacer bar are reduced, the overall performance of the glazed unit is significantly better.

WARM402

In terms of complexity, a cut and keyed spacer bar has nine components and a bent spacer bar has three parts. As there are no keys and the desiccant is integral to the material, a warm edge bar is a single component.

Why Do I Need It?

The new energy ratings for windows were introduced recently. In these, rather than looking at the U Value of the unit in isolation, the entire glazed window is measured as a whole. Factors such as the U value remain important, but in addition the air flow through the frame and solar gain of the unit are included. Click here to read more about the new energy ratings ...

By reducing heat losses through the frame, warm edge spacer bar can help achieve a

higher rating than the aluminium equivalent. C rated windows and above are allowed to use the energy efficient approved logo which is a recognised and powerful marketing tool.

Does It Have Any Other Applications?

cfox05

Warm edge spacer bar is a versatile material when it comes to non-standard units. It is commonly used by Clayton Glass in shaped roof units, where both the thermal efficiency and the speed of manufacture are improved. It is also particularly suited to the manufacture of complex integra bar applications as it can be worked with to a much higher degree than its aluminium equivalent.

What Is The Availability?

Warm Edge units are available now from Clayton Glass. The same cavities are available as standard bar, and there is a choice of 4 colours, with light grey as the standard equivalent to silver. Warm Edge units can have the same decorative additions as standard including lead and Georgian work.
