What is it?                                                                                                                                                                     Self Cleaning glass does just that. It represents a major advance in glass technology and means windows will look cleaner & better looking with minimum intervention from the householder & without the need for chemical cleaners.

Where can it be used?                                                                                                                                           Self Cleaning glass has been designed for use in domestic windows, doors & conservatories. As a money and labour saving device it works well in the household, & as a commercial product it is particularly suited where there are issues of height & access, & can remove the need for a reversible sash.

Who manufactures the raw glass?                                                                                                                Whilst there is more than one version on the market, Clayton Glass will be using the Pilkington 'Activ' product.

How does it work?                                                                                                                                   The glass has an invisible 'Dual Action' coating to the external face. Firstly it uses the ultraviolet energy in daylight to breakdown organic dirt. Secondly, rather than forming in droplets like normal glass, surface water will 'sheet' down the glass carrying dirt away with it.

Yes, but does it really work?                                                                                                              Self cleaning glass requires daylight & rain to work. The sun provides the daylight & the rain provides the water (we are in England after all!). Given these conditions, yes it really does work!

Will my customer have heard of it?                                                                                               Pilkington have invested millions of pounds in a major launch campaign to run across 2006. If they watch TV, your potential customer will hear about self cleaning glass over the coming weeks and months.

When is it available, and what will the range be?                                                                 Clayton Glass can supply Self Cleaning units from January 2006. Units can be toughened or float, & of course combined with the usual Low E, laminates etc. Specify 'Self Cleaning' to your order, & we will do the rest.

What do I need to do to be able to buy it?                                                                         In order for us to be able supply you with Pilkington Activ you will need to complete a form & certify you have read the handling & processing guidelines, which will also register you as a dealer on the Pilkington Activ website. These documents will be sent to you once we have received your registration form.

How long will it last?                                                                                                 The coating is extremely durable and providing it is not physically damaged or removed by abrasives it will last for the life of the installation. The standard 10 year guarantee currently supplied with every Clayton Glass unit will not be affected.

What about maintenance?                                                                                 No maintenance is required, however in the prolonged absence of rainwater it is necessary to use a hose pipe or soft cloth to wash the dirt from the glass

Will silicon damage the coating?                                                                 Silicon in gaskets and sealants will not degrade the coating but they will leach onto the glass surface & inhibit the action of the glass as they will prevent the sheeting action which carries the dirt away. For this reason silicon & its derivatives should be avoided.

How do I know if my profile system is OK?                                         Much work has been done with profile suppliers prior to the launch of the Activ product & most modern coextruded systems are fine. A full list is published on the Pilkington website.
