Installing Glass Roofs Safely

Technical Recommendations for Glazing Glass Roof Units

Recommended Personal Protective Equipment

* Hard Hat                                                                                                                                                   * Safety footwear                                                                                                                                      * Anti slip/Cut resistant gloves                                                                                                                   * Wrist Guards                                                                                                                                             * Glass suction cups                                                                                                                                  * Safety Glasses                                                                                                                                         * High visibility jacket (if work area is not isolated)                                                                                     * Beware of the hazard working in hot or wet weather

Storage of Glass Units Prior to Installation

* Personal protective equipment must be worn when manoeuvring glass units                                                                * Store the glass units upright on a wood pallet resting against a non abrasive surface at an angle of around 3o         * No more than 5 sheets are to be stacked together per stack                                                                                         * Store the glass units under tarpaulin and away from the open air where possible until ready for use

Recommended Safety Measures

* Authorised scaffolding company who can “scaff-tag” the scaffold. Guidance should be taken from the  HSE Information Sheet         No 49 (revision) “General access scaffolds and ladders”.                                                                                                                          * For regular installations it may be practical to use an Arco Sigma deck platform inside and another one outside with a guard rail.       * Equipment to cordon off the site e.g. chains                                                                                                                                             * All such glass is toughened

Recommended Safe Installation

* The glazing operation will usually require 3 filters                                                                                                                               * The scaffold should be erected internally, up to a height where the operator can comfortable touch the ridge with their arms above their head                                                                                                                                                                                     * A working platform should be erected externally to the height of the eaves beam and about 8 feet long (although this can vary according to the length of the conservatory)                                                                                                                                         * There are likely to be certain glass units that will be inaccessible from an external working platform.  In this instance, we advise the use of a “Conservatory Access Ladder”. These are specially designed access ladders with a fully adjustable pitch. As these units are likely to be of relatively small size, it should be possible for 1 or 2 men on the internal scaffold to pass the unit through to the man on the access ladder. The unit can then be adjusted into position on the glazing bars

Positioning of Glass Roof Glazing Sheet

* To get the glass to roof height the glass is supported at ground level by 1 man whilst the other 2 climb the tower                              * The glass is fed up to the 2 men on the tower who help lift the unit up                                                                                                  * Once the unit is on the tower, the man on the floor goes inside and stands on the internal platform                                                     * When everyone is ready, the unit is lowered by the 2 men above and supported by the one inside. Gradually the unit is guided into position on the glazing bars. Once the 2 men can no longer guide it, the unit will be fully supported by the glazing bars.                      * The men above, their role is to stop the unit slipping back. The one inside, guides it into position

Roof Styles Which Require Muntin Bar

The muntin bar allows large pieces of glass which are too big or deemed unsafe to be supplied in on piece to be joined together. Please note that not all glass roofs require muntin bars, nor  those which do have muntin bar need it on every roof glazing sheet

Other Helpful Information on Installing Glass Roof Glazing Sheets

* Glass end plates are to be fitted to the end of each roof spar on P-Shapes, T-Shapes, Gullwings and Double Hipped models. These glass plates give extra support to stop the glass unit from slipping down the roof spar. All other models have a similar device called a ‘glazing stop’ which is factory fitted                                                                                                                             * Glass Valley Paddles are added onto the end of each valley spar, again to stop the glass roof glazing sheet from slipping down the roof spars                                                                                                                                                                                       * Glass Roof Glazing Sheets still require PVC Polycarbonate End Closure
