In our continual drive to develop  quality and the product range, Clayton Glass have made another significant  investment in upgrading one of it’s cutting tables with online edge deletion.  The Bottero cutting table, is operating 24 hours a day, cutting over 8,000 metres of glass a week. The  Edge deletion upgrade permits full scale production of soft coated products by Clayton Glass. Within 2 weeks of the upgrade, four customers have already started ordering soft coated low E  glass, which when argon gas filled can achieve a u value of 1.1. The soft coat  products are anticipated to account for over 10% of sales in the coming year,  that’s over 50,000 units in 2007.

What Is Edge Deletion

Soft coated glasses have a metallic  coating applied to the glass during production. The coating gives the glass its  properties, e.g. low u value or solar control.

When using the glass to make a sealed unit, the seal must be made with the glass, rather than the metallic coating, therefore the metallic coating must be removed to ensure the seal that will withstand the UK weather and  last the test of time. The process of removing the metallic coating is called Edge Deletion.
